Presentations
Presentations given to industry, on subjects such as Semantic Web applications, FIBO and the meanings of various scare words like Taxonomy and Ontology.
Most recent papers are about the Financial Industry Business Ontology - including the conceptual modeling principles which distinguish this from many application ontologies.
- Introductory overview of FIBO given at Knowledge Driven Finance event at the FT in London 30 October 2014 - a good starting point for understanding what FIBO is.
- Update on FIBO given at the Open Financial Data Group - this deck includes a deeper introduction to the application of semantic principles in the FIBO Business Conceptual Ontology.
- A recording of this presentation is available here.
- Also available on Slideshare
- Business Conceptual Ontology - introduction to theory - see Conceptual Modeling Exploration slides presented at OMG in September 2014 (superseded presentation given at OMG in March 2014).
- Business Domain Modelling Principles
-
A very early PowerPoint presentation providing an overview of the principles of business domain modelling, in particular the static (data) aspect of business semantics. It covers the theory and background of ontology modelling, and gives some practical examples using the TopBraid Composer tool from TopQuadrant.
More recent papers and presentations will be added to this area shortly.
White Papers
Papers published in the public domain.
- Financial Securities Ontologies: An Exploration
- Proof-of-concept paper on what an ontology might look like for financial securities, using the example of an equity instrument.
- Domain Modelling Tools
- Details of the main tools available for modelling of business domain information. This covers both structural models (ontology) and behavioural models (process or choreography).
- Enterprise Semantics
-
An exploration of the issues around the management of enterprise data, with a particular emphasis on the importance of identifying common meanings for terms across the organisation.
- Requirements Management considerations for XML Standards
- Published by London Market Systems, 2003
- An exploration of the issues around enterprise data management. This paper carries a particular emphasis on the importance of identifying common meanings for terms. Some of the details are now out of date.
Technical Notes
Technical notes and discussion papers. These were usually written in the course of trying to understand or explain some issue relevant in the development of industry standards at the time.
- Structural Domain Modelling Tools
-
Simple definitions of how the models of business data requirements can be managed. It explains the concepts of Taxonomy, Ontology and related buzz-words in a simple framework.
- Representing Time in Market Data
-
An exploration of the modelling issues involved when understanding the different time characteristics of different elements of market data; for example, past, present and projected debt coupon amounts. The paper addresses whether these issues can be resolved simply by using a time series or tagging individual messages. Prepared as part of work on the FISD's Securities Model Working Group.
Earlier Work by Mike Bennett
Hypercube Principal Mike Bennett's earlier material, publication and explorations from before I started work on financial industry formal semantics.
- The Semantic Network Programming Environment
-
Paper presented at the Institute of Electrical Engineering (IEE, now IET) at Savoy Place in London in 1995, while a principal at Accuro Information Engineering. Describes a programming idea that was then in development which applies programmable logic controller (PLC) programming interface concepts and artificial neural functions to provide a programming environment for learning systems with preconfigured semantics.
-
Includes the story about the fish, introducing the concept of "virtual meaning".
